The government owns and operates a well-developed and well equipped telecommunications system. Automatic dialling for the majority of exchanges is provided by a VHF radio circuit. In 2010, there were an estimated 4.573 million mainline telephones in use. Also in that same year, there were approximately 34.456 million mobile phones in use. Telegraph and radio-telephone connections link Peninsular Malaysia with most foreign countries.

State-owned RTM operates two free-to-air terrestrial local television channels licensed to broadcast in Malaysia, as well as 32 radio channels nationwide. Media Prima is the parent company of four television channels and three radio channels. Broadcasts are in English, Malay, five Chinese dialects, Tamil, and numerous local languages and dialects. As of 2001 Malaysia had 35 AM and 391 FM radio stations and one television station. In 2000, there were 420 radios and 168 televisions sets for every 1,000 people.

In 2009, there were 15.355 million internet subscribers.

state-owned television broadcaster operates 2 TV networks with relays throughout the country, and the leading private commercial media group operates 4 TV stations with numerous relays throughout the country; satellite TV subscription service is available; state-owned radio broadcaster operates multiple national networks as well as regional and local stations; large number of private commercial radio broadcasters and some subscription satellite radio services are available; about 400 radio stations overall (2008)
