Kelantan
Bordering Thailand in the north is the state of Kelantan, whose capital Kota Bharu is a colourful, vibrant city, very much the archetypal South East Asian border town. The beaches here are clean and unspoilt and the sea ideal for swimming, diving and fishing. The state is renowned for its many cultural festivals, some of which are unique to the region. Puja Umur (the birthday of the Sultan) is celebrated with a week-long festival, beginning with a parade in Kota Bharu. A form of art unique to Kelantan is the Ma’yong, a combination of ballet, opera, romantic drama and comedy, originally a form of court entertainment.
